For many, this can feel like the most daunting step in addressing overdue tax issues.
Getting help: Contact your registered tax agent and request a copy of your ATO Pre-filling Report. This is the fastest way to recover any missing tax information.
The ATO gathers your income data from sources such as banks, employers, and government agencies. This information is linked to your tax file number and compiled into your pre-filling report, which includes:
- PAYG Payment Summaries from employers (group certificates)
- Centrelink payment summaries
- Private health insurance details
- Bank interest earned
- Dividend and investment income
- Your HELP (HECS) balance for the applicable year
A registered tax agent can access pre-filling reports dating back to 2009 and even request data from as far back as 2001.
Many people can lodge their return using the information in this report alone. If lost information is preventing you from submitting your tax returns, we can help remove that hurdle for you.
You’ll also need to gather receipts and deductions for the relevant years. If you haven’t lodged for years, finding these might be difficult. But don’t worry—certain deductions can be claimed without receipts, and we can help determine what you can claim based on your job and investment situation.
Do-it-yourself: You will need to gather all your paperwork independently. Even if you’ve lost some, there are simple ways to replace it. Check out our article on finding lost tax records.
